What Counts as a Roofing Emergency
Not every roofing problem is an emergency — a few moss-covered tiles or a gutter that overflows in heavy rain can usually wait a week or two. A true emergency is anything that's putting water, weather or falling masonry into contact with your home right now. That includes:
- Active leaks coming through a ceiling into habitable rooms
- Storm damage that has exposed the roofing felt or roof boards
- Fallen or dangerously loose chimney masonry
- Flashings pulled away from the abutment after heavy rain or wind
- Tiles or slates scattered across a garden, driveway or public footpath
- Standing water pooling on a flat roof after the membrane has split
- A roof that's been hit by a falling tree, branch or scaffold
When you ring us, we'll triage the problem over the phone. If it's genuinely urgent, we'll dispatch a roofer straight away. If the immediate risk can be managed with a bucket and a phone call to your insurer, we'll tell you that honestly — we'd rather see you tomorrow morning for a proper repair than charge you emergency rates for something that wasn't one.
How Fast We Can Be With You
For postcodes inside Sheffield itself — S1 through S14, plus S17, S20, S35 and S36 — our typical response time is 60 to 90 minutes during daylight hours. Further out, in Rotherham, Barnsley, Chesterfield or Worksop, it's usually 90 minutes to two hours. Overnight and weekend callouts run a bit longer because we're travelling in from home rather than from a job.
The first visit is about making the property safe and watertight. That typically means getting a tarpaulin over the damaged area, battening it down properly, removing anything that's at risk of falling, and making sure the inside of the property isn't taking on more water. We won't attempt a full permanent repair at 11pm in the pouring rain — nobody should. What we will do is stop the immediate problem, so you can sleep, and come back in daylight to sort it properly.
Common Emergencies We Handle in Sheffield
Sheffield's housing stock is a mixed bag. Victorian and Edwardian terraces in areas like Walkley, Crookes and Heeley make up a huge proportion of the properties we work on, and they come with their own predictable problems — century-old Yorkshire stone slate roofs that have had half a dozen patch repairs over the years, lead valleys that have corroded through, brick chimney stacks that have shed their pots in a storm. Post-war semis and detached houses in Dore, Totley and Fulwood tend to throw up different issues: failed bitumen felt under the tiles causing damp in the loft, split GRP flat roofs over rear extensions, blocked box gutters between twin pitches.
The weather matters too. Sheffield sits at the edge of the Peak District and catches the westerly winds coming off the Pennines. A December storm doesn't just dump rain on us — it drives it horizontally into any weakness in a roof, under laps and flashings that would be perfectly fine in a milder climate. What Happens Next
Once we've made your roof safe and watertight, we'll write up a quotation for the permanent repair within 24 to 48 hours. For minor works — re-bedding a ridge tile, replacing a length of lead flashing, patching a flat roof — we can often come back and do it the same week. For bigger jobs, like rebuilding a chimney stack or stripping and recovering a storm-damaged elevation, we'll give you a realistic timescale and book you in.
If you're going through your buildings insurance, we're happy to deal directly with the loss adjuster. We keep dated photos of every emergency call-out, write detailed damage reports, and provide itemised quotes in the format insurers expect. Most of the big UK insurers know us and we've yet to have a quote rejected for being outside scope.
Emergency Callout Charges
We charge a flat call-out fee for emergency attendance outside of normal working hours, which covers the roofer's time, fuel, and materials used on the temporary make-safe (tarpaulins, battens, fixings). The call-out fee is discounted against the cost of the full permanent repair if you go ahead with us — in practice, if you book us for the repair, the emergency visit works out close to free.
During working hours (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm) there's no call-out charge for diagnosis or emergency make-safe — we only charge for materials and time on site.
