The city's housing stock is astonishingly varied. A single S6 postcode covers everything from tightly-packed back-to-backs in Hillsborough, through 1930s semis along Middlewood Road, to modern apartment blocks near Kelham Island. Each brings different roofing problems. Pre-war terraces in Walkley, Crookes and Heeley typically still have their original Welsh slate — beautiful, but often reaching the end of their 100-year fixing life. Post-war housing in Gleadless and Manor tends to have concrete interlocking tiles that are reaching the stage where the nibs are snapping and slipping in windy weather. Newer developments in the S20 area around Crystal Peaks tend to have machine-made plain tiles with fragile mortar bedding that we're now replacing with dry-fix ridge and hip systems. Weather & Wind Exposure
Sheffield sits right at the eastern edge of the Peak District, which means we cop the full force of the westerly winds coming off the Pennines. This matters for roofs. Wind-driven rain doesn't just fall on a roof — it's pushed horizontally under laps, behind flashings, through any gap the weather can find. Named storms every winter guarantee us a week of emergency calls, usually for lifted ridges, torn felt under-eaves and dislodged chimney cowls. If you live west of the city centre — Stannington, Loxley, Bradfield — the wind exposure is even higher, and we recommend upgrading to mechanically-fixed dry ridges and high-performance breathable membranes whenever we re-roof.
