Local Roofing Knowledge — Barnsley
Barnsley's building stock includes some proper stone terraces in the town centre — beautiful honey-coloured Yorkshire stone walls with Welsh slate roofs, many of which have been re-roofed in Spanish slate or even cheap Chinese slate in the past thirty years. Replacing these with proper Welsh slate when they fail is some of our most satisfying work. Outside the town, the villages up towards Penistone sit at real altitude — Cubley, Thurlstone, Millhouse Green are all over 200m — and they take a proper beating from west winds off the Pennines. We've replaced more ridges, hips and chimney flashings up there than anywhere else in South Yorkshire. If you're up in the high villages, plan for a full mechanical dry-fix system when you next re-roof.
Weather & Wind Exposure
High Barnsley — the area west towards Penistone — has an altitude and exposure problem that catches plenty of homeowners out. A standard tile roof that would last 60 years in Sheffield city centre may start losing ridges and verges in 20 up there. We always recommend upgrading specifications for properties above about 180m: mechanically-fixed dry ridges, six-nails-per-tile fixing on perimeters, high-wind verge systems.
