Hillsborough is classic Sheffield terrace territory — long rows of late-Victorian and Edwardian two-up two-downs and three-beds along Middlewood Road, Leppings Lane, Penistone Road North. The original roof covering was almost universally Welsh slate, and many of those slate roofs are still up there, now 100-130 years old. Some are sound and will easily do another 30-50 years. Others are on their last legs. Weather & Wind Exposure
Hillsborough sits in the lower Don valley and is reasonably sheltered, but it does catch some wind coming down the valley from the west. Chimneys are a recurring issue — many of the terraces have twin stacks shared between pairs of houses, and they're often in a poor state requiring rebuilds rather than repointing.
